Research Summary

My primary research interests center upon the interactions between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters and their synaptic and cellular effects that regulate certain aspects of normal neural function as well as some neuropathologies. We are particularly focused upon the synaptic changes that contribute to the induction and expression of alcohol-related disorders (withdrawal, dependence, tolerance, toxicity, cognitive effects), but we also work on other processes such as learning and memory, neuronal development and the development of epilepsy. My lab is composed of three main units: (1) an electrophysiology core which includes patch clamp recordings in brain slices, dissociated cultures or organotypic explants; (2) a molecular core which uses immunoblot, immunofluorescence, pcr, and gene transfer techniques, and (3) an imaging core which houses laser scanning confocal and two-photon microscopes. Therefore, students have access to a broad range of some of the most advanced techniques in use in neurobiology today.
