Preliminary Part B
§
Part B
should be arranged roughly 6-8 months after passing Part A
of the exams.
§
The
written report should be made available to the committee
members at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting.
During this meeting, the report will be presented orally to
the committee.
§
Your
Part B committee will also be your Dissertation committee.
The committee should consist of five members, one being your
supervising professor. Of the five committee members, four
should be inside the
Microbiology Graduate Studies Committee
(GSC) and one
member should be chosen outside of the Microbiology GSC.
§
The
student will present a clear and concise description of the
intended thesis project in written, prose, form. The
planned work will then be orally described to the committee,
who will be able to offer suggestions and comments. The
proposal will be retained in the student's file.
§
The
proposed work should be clearly written and adequately
documented, with an introduction indicating the significance
of the project and it's potential contribution to
knowledge. Although an outline might be useful for
organizing the proposal, the final version submitted to the
committee should be in prose form.
§
The
project should be well-formulated prior to the meeting with
the committee. Part B is not the occasion for the committee
to assist the student in defining a worthwhile project.
§
If it
appears that there are significant deficiencies in the
research plan, the student may be asked to rewrite the
proposal and resubmit it to the committee. The committee
can then decide whether it wishes to meet again with the
student for a second presentation.
§
Students will meet with their committee annual after
advancement to candidacy.
§
After
your exam, go to
http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/pdn/index.html and fill out
the forms under Doctoral Forms: Candidacy Application
Packets.
§
Pick up
a form for the committee members to sign from the Graduate
Coordinator before your exam
