Education

  • B.S., Texas Tech University, 1971
  • Ph.D., University of Utah, 1977

Research Interests

Current research is oriented toward solving basic questions about evolution mechanisms. Topics include the evolutionary significance of recombination and sex, molecular genetics of adaptations, selfish genes, and cooperation. Research organisms are chiefly bacteriophage because of the ease of laboratory manipulations afforded by them. Students are encouraged to initiate their research on a well-defined model system to gain experience and then expand their research to problems of their own design.
