Education

1999-Present  Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Lee Fuiman's laboratory, University of Texas at Austin, Department of Marine Science.

1992  Ph.D. Department of Zoology, Aberdeen University, Scotland.

My Ph.D, supervised by Prof. Dominic Houlihan, investigated some of the behavioral and physiological factors that can help explain individual variation in growth rates in fish using rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, as model species.

1987  B.Sc. in Marine Biology & Zoology (1st Class honors) University of Wales, Bangor.

Professional Experience

1999-present  Research Fellow, University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute.

My current project, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, seeks to examine the effect of parental exposure to sublethal levels of one of several representative endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on the survival skills and growth performance of Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, larvae. The EDCs we are working with are Aroclor 1254 (PCB), methylmercury (organometal) and nonylphenol (alkylphenol).

1996-1999 NERC Personal Fellowship of Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences, Glasgow University, Scotland.

In 1996, I was fortunate in securing one of the eight 3 year postdoctoral fellowships awarded by the UK Natural Environmental Research Council (graded alpha-5) to continue research on the physiological and behavioral ecology of salmonid fish. My research examined how individual differences in a physiological trait (standard metabolic rate) influenced the behavior, physiology and subsequent choice of life history strategy in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar.

1993-1996 Research Fellow, Department of Zoology, Aberdeen University, Scotland.

From 1993 to 1995, I was employed on a BBSRC project examining the effects of temperature on the behavior, growth and physiology of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. From 1995 to 1995, I was employed on a NERC project examining how laboratory derived measures of physiological performance of fish can be used to estimate performance in the field using the physiological ecology of flounder, Platichthys flesus, in the Ythan estuary, Aberdeenshire as a model.
