Brackenridge Field Lab Research Greenhouse

In Fall 2002, a new research greenhouse was constructed at Brackenridge Field labs. The facility was engineered by Jonkman greenhouses and designed to facilitate detailed physiological and genetic studies of plants by UT faculty and students. The facility combines a headhouse with ~1,000 of bench and storage space with two independently controlled greenhouse bays. Each bay consists of three rolling benches totally 300 sq. ft of growing space. The greenhouse is cooled with traditional side- and roof-venting and evaporative coolers, overhead foggers, and a mechanical shade cloth system. Supplemental lighting is provided by overhead High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures. The entire system is controlled by a Microgrow controller system linked to a computer interface. The facility is available for research or teaching applications at a modest bench fee basis.
