About the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Section

Modern developments in Microbiology have fostered exciting new advances in infectious diseases, cancer, biotechnology and immunology. Our faculty direct modern, molecular research programs which address basic, important biological questions. The Section has an outstanding reputation and many faculty members are invited speakers at national and international meetings and symposia. All of our graduate faculty are funded by competitively awarded research grants. Many of the graduate faculty serve or have served on editorial boards of journals and on advisory committees of the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. Furthermore many members of our faculty have been recipients of teaching awards.

Degree programs offered in the Section include Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Microbiology and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. In addition to introductory microbiology courses which are taken by microbiology majors and premedical, pre-pharmacy, and other allied health students, the Section also offers upper-division and graduate courses in biochemistry, virology, molecular genetics, immunology, tumor biology, infectious diseases, biotechnology, ecology, physiology and mycology.

The Section is chaired by Professor Ian J Molineux. MGM is one of four component sections of the School of Biological Sciences.
