Post-Doc Association

Welcome everybody!

We are the official association of the ~100 post-docs of the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin.

Our goal is to:

  • get to know each other
  • give ourselves a forum to discuss problems post-docs may have at UT
  • exchange experience/information on science, general issues, such as insurance etc
  • discuss our research in an informal environment
  • have fun...

Currently Greg Ippolito, Erin Murphy, Matthew Schmerer, Laura Newcomb, and Christine Vogel are responsible only because we decided to organize the SBS postdocs. But this is opened to every one of you, and we are strongly encouraging people to get involved! If you are interested in being part of the committee you can email us or let us know at the Tuesday meetings.

So come and join us, get in touch, get involved!

News (as of September 2006)

  • We now have UT-wide free membership for the National Postdoc Association.  Details  how to sign up can be found here. More information from Dr. Hackert about post-doc benefits at UT can be found here.
  • This year's MGM and Friends Poster Session is coming up (October 13th).  Details can be found here.  Contact Liz  Wyckoff by Friday, September 29th.
  • As a follow-up of our special event on how to apply for tenure track positions, we created a website summarizing useful information on the next step.  Along those lines, we also created a webpage listing networking information.
  • We established partnership with Career.edu.  Current job postings can be found here. We have an ID for Career.edu which allows UT faculty members to automatically post and cross list vacancies on Career.edu and this website. UT vacancies will always be displayed at the top.  Contact Christine (cvogel*) for the ID and further information.
  • We created a (voluntary) list of addresses and other information of current post-docs at SBS.
  • Matthew Schmerer initialized the formation of a UT-wide postdoctoral organization, called the Austin Post-doc Association. This is a very important step towards a better recognition of postdocs at UT, and we are excited about getting the new association going.  Please contact Matthew (leechman*) if you have any questions or want to get involved.

Events (as of September 2006)

Informal meeting of all SBS post-docs every third Tuesday of the month, noon, in MBB 1.210. Free pizza and some good science involved.

Meetings in 2006: Tuesday, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 18, October 17, November 21, December 19.

*** Call for Speakers *** - Post-docs, Friends, Colleagues! We need speakers.  Our seminar series needs you.  We want to hear what your research is about, what your story is, maybe we can even help!  We need postdocs who volunteer as speakers at the next meetings.

Why volunteer?

  • It's simple, it's only 20 min, 30min max.  It's easy, informal, relaxed.  You know your work, you know what to say.
  • Discover the excitement in your research!  Tell others the story of your life.  Why are you in the lab the whole day?
  • Make us happy.  You give us science.  You give us ideas.  You inspire us.  You ensure the free pizza!

Please contact Laura (llnewcomb*) if you like to volunteer as a speaker at one of the next meetings.

This year's MGM and Friends Poster Session is coming up (October 13th).  Details can be found here.  Contact Liz  Wyckoff by Friday, September 29th.
